The only standout feature for me in Mavericks is the Apple TV support which I use to watch video while I'm working on the Mac, since my Mac is in the living room. So on my two older and much weaker Macs the simple act of browsing was a more pleasurable and overall quicker. Even with the latest version of Mavericks it is still annoyingly there. It's as if at the OS level some kind of security thing was going on to slow down the beginning of the loading of web pages. One thing in particular that I noticed was a slight delay when browsing from web page to web page with Mavericks, and it didn't matter what browser I was using, Safari, Firefox, or Chrome, and that was on my maxed out current late 2012 iMac. I never did the before and after thing with my previous 2008 iMac and 2010 mini but it was very clear to me that Snow Leopard was the more responsive OS compared to Mavericks on my maxed out current late 2012 iMac. The only feature I really like in Mavericks is the extended Apple TV support. It's a shame too as Snow Leopard was a really nice lightweight OS. Snow Leopard is unsupported by Apple since March, according to Wikipedia, so if the computers connect to the Internet then you are much more vulnerable security wise.

Did anybody already do this upgrade on similar machines? How does the speed before/after compare?ĭouble the RAM on the MacBook and go ahead and upgrade. My big fear is that the newer OS could slow down my computers. In general I don't feel the need of any of the new features. I think the upgrade would mostly make sense to avoid compatibility issues with newer applications that most likely will not support Snow Leopard anymore.

I saw now that Apple offer for free the upgrade to OS 10.9 (Maverick) and Snow Leopard support will be most likely discontinued.

They both never gave me any issue and run smoothly and reasonably fast.
